1. Add a Sandbox
Yes, this is going to get messy, but your kids will love you forever for it. Even if you didn’t get to go to the beach this year – or even if you did – the little ones can still have fun in the sun and build their sandcastles.
2. Invest in Your Seats
Seating is, perhaps, one of the most important parts. Why? Because you’re probably going to be sitting down most of the time and you want you and your guests to be comfortable. So don’t skimp on seating and don’t just get lawn chairs; spring for the proper outdoor ones that will look better and feel better.
3. Lighting Sets the Mood
There are lots of different ways you can create a dreamy atmosphere via smart use of light. The easiest way is probably to use lanterns – hung up or placed on either side of the walkway – but candles are a good idea, as well.
Bonus tip: use LED tea lights, instead of real candles, for maximum safety and no ill-fated surprises.
4. Cover it up
Summer rains can never be predicted, so it’s always better to be prepared than stuck in a damp situation. You can either buy a canopy tent or, if you had the foresight, build a gazebo for precisely this kind of situation.
Bonus tip: a gazebo can be very beautifully lit with the tea lights I mentioned earlier. Give it a try!
5. Go all out with a Hammock
Need I say more? Whenever you or your guests feel lazy, just go right out and plop yourself in your very own outdoor hammock. It’s great for reading, hanging out or even taking a nap in the shade, after a too-rich meal.
